Singapore’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan

Strategy 1: Safeguard our biodiversity

Implement species conservation and recovery programme to protect the already small population of corals in Chek Jawa. For instance, making a Coral Nursery to ensure that the population of corals do not die out. One example of Coral Nursery would be the Marine Rehabilitation Programme-Coral Nursery off Pulau Semakau.

Strategy 2: Consider biodiversity issues in policy and decision-making

Incorporating biodiversity conservation considerations into administrative processes.

For instance, the government can implement a stricter policy to control the number of visitors and having stricter littering laws in Chek Jawa to counter the problem of littering in Chek Jawa

Strategy 3: Improve knowledge of our biodiversity and natural environment

Encourage and facilitate research on the eco system of Chek Jawa to observe the interaction between the biological components and the litters in the physical environment of Chek Jawa. The knowledge then can be used to educate visitors and convince them as to why they should not litter. The knowledge can also be used to design clean  up programmes that reduces the effects of litter on the eco system more efficiently.

Strategy 4: Enhance education and public awareness

Increase the awareness of the problem of littering in Chek Jawa through media platforms such as the world wide web or through event like public seminars.

Strategy 5: Strengthen partnership with stakeholders and promote international collaboration

Encourage participation in the stewardship of environment such as providing incentives to boat operators and locals in Pulau Ubin if they join the clean up of Chek Jawa once a year.

Furthermore, after further discussions our group came out with more ideas on how to solve the littering issue other than the strategies that the government implemented. The other solutions would be hiring more cleaners, having more dustbins along the broadwalk, organising an initiative such as monthly waste collection in exchange for money for villagers and putting up more posters and signboards.
